Bhopal Discussion at Occupy Boston

Today was a special occasion for the residents of Dewey Square at the Occupy Boston movement. On December 3, 2011, exactly 27 years ago, the world’s worst industrial catastrophe unfolded now know as the Bhopal disaster. The participants included a number of Metro-Boston residents as well as a survivor of the accident. Union Carbide, now a subsidiary of Dow Chemicals was responsible for the accident. While Union Carbide eventually reached a settlement with the government of India, the atmosphere today was one of dissatisfaction. The settlement was far from enough, and today Bhopal, India is still as inhospitable as it was when the leakage had first occurred. A reoccurring theme is awareness and boycott, urging citizens to protest against Dow’s advertising investment in the 2012 (not 2014) London Olympics. If Dow can afford millions for advertisements, why can it not afford millions to help restore Bhopal? While lives cannot be restored, they can look toward the future with stewardship and compassion. Of course the key is will they?

    Hi Tom,
Thank you so much for putting this up. I am a volunteer for the Bhopal Campaign and we are really grateful for your support.
Just a small correction: Dow has signed a contract with the International Olympics committee for 10 years and is one of the official sponsors for London 2012 Olympics. (not 2014).
We are requesting the Olympics committee to drop Dow as a partner unless it cleans up Bhopal. To support our cause, please consider signing this petition:

    Thanks

Oh, sorry about the error. I knew it was 2012, I must have just got distracted while writing. In any case it is great to hear from you guys and such a great cause, I hope Dow responds and if not to withdraw as a sponsor at least make right with the people of Bhopal as they certainly have the means to do so.

      Best,

      Tom
